Following are highlights of the American Heart Association Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics-2023 Update related to sudden cardiac arrest:

  • In 2020, any-mention sudden cardiac arrest mortality in the United States was 436,852. 
  • According to 2021 U.S. data, the majority of adult Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests (OHCA) occur at a home or residence (73.4%). Public settings (16.3%) and nursing homes (10.3%) were the second and third most common locations of adult OHCA. 
  • According to 2021 CARES data for adult OHCA only, survival to hospital discharge was 9.1% for all EMS-treated non-traumatic OHCA cardiac arrests and survival with good functional status was 7%. Bystander witnessed adult arrests had a 13.3% survival to hospital discharge and 9-1-1 responder witnessed arrests had a 15.9% survival to hospital discharge. 
  • According to 2021 CARES data, survival to hospital discharge was 5.7% for 1,555 children <1 year of age; 15% for 1,087 children 1 to 12 years of age, and 15.5% for 849 children 13 to 18 years of age.
