Rescuer(s):Terrie Randleman-Smith
Amidst the somber atmosphere of her 91-year-old father's funeral at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Oberlin, Ohio, a wife found herself facing an unimaginable crisis. Moments after her husband, Johnny, finished a moving solo rendition of "It Is Well with My Soul," he slumped in his seat, unresponsive. Panic surged through the grieving family and stunned congregation as the wife desperately called for help. Suddenly, Terrie, a church usher, rushed forward, taking charge of the situation. With no time to spare, she began CPR, her swift actions bringing a glimmer of hope to the chaotic scene.
Within minutes, EMTs arrived, delivering a life-saving shock from a defibrillator that restored Johnny's pulse. He was immediately transported to the nearby Mercy Health-Allen Hospital Emergency Department. It was there that the wife learned of Terrie's background as a retired nursing director from the same hospital, a comforting coincidence that felt like a blessing in disguise. After stabilization, Johnny was transferred to The Cleveland Clinic, where he was diagnosed with Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). He underwent open-heart surgery and received an ICD implant. Despite the emotional rollercoaster of the experience, the family remained grateful for the exceptional care Johnny received during his 18-day hospitalization.
Though the father's funeral was tragically interrupted, the wife is eternally thankful that they were surrounded by a supportive community and a skilled angel named Terrie. Her quick thinking and expertise saved Johnny's life and preserved his brain function. Back home in Fairfax, Virginia, the family cherishes their connection with Terrie, their newfound angel and adopted family member. Three months after his SCA, Johnny is steadily regaining his strength through cardiac rehabilitation, looking forward to the day he can rejoin his church choir and fill the sanctuary with his voice once more.
