New Orleans, LA -- The 610 Stompers, known for their extraordinary dance moves, are teaming up with Heartbeat NOLA to make Mardi Gras safer and to raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest. Together, they are holding a hands-only CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training event that promises to empower the 610 Stompers to be ready to act if someone in their ranks or along the parade route experiences a cardiac emergency.
Event Details:
- What: Hands-Only CPR and AED Training Event
- Where: Bayou Beer Garden, New Orleans
- Date: Saturday, January 20, 2024
- Time: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
At this event, Heartbeat NOLA will train the 610 Stompers how to perform Hands-Only CPR and how to use an AED. Heartbeat NOLA will also donate an AED to the 610 Stompers which they will have with them on the Stompers trailer, making them a mobile team of potential citizen first responders along the parade routes during Mardi Gras.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the United States, with more than 360,000 cardiac arrests (1,000 every day) occurring outside of a hospital each year, and only 1 in 10 of those victims survive. This event is part of Heartbeat NOLA's mission to increase the odds of surviving a cardiac arrest by increasing awareness about SCA and the importance of bystander CPR and AED training.
Maurice Trosclair, a New Orleans area musician, has a profound appreciation for the significance of AEDs and CPR. Ever since his initial sudden cardiac arrest incident on Valentine's Day in 2017, he and his wife Nancy have passionately embraced the cause of increasing the availability of AEDs in the New Orleans area and raising awareness about Citizen CPR and AED utilization. To date, they have successfully installed 10 AEDs at various public venues in the New Orleans region. Their knowledge and dedication proved invaluable when, in May 2021, Nancy performed life-saving CPR on Maurice during a critical moment in Yosemite, California. Under the banner of 'Heartbeat NOLA,' they have launched an Awareness and Education Campaign, alongside fundraising initiatives, all aimed at making a difference in saving lives.
The 610 Stompers, a 100-man strong, all-male dance group, is known for their passion for dance and charity work. Along with their 610 Splits, they've performed for numerous charitable causes and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars. This event aligns with their mission to spread their love for dance and contribute to the community by empowering their members with life-saving skills.
This “Dancing with a Purpose” event underscores the commitment of both the 610 Stompers and Heartbeat NOLA to make Mardi Gras safer, one dance, and one heartbeat at a time.
